Berkeley-based Xoma (NASDAQ: XOMA) reformulated the drug, Xoma 629, which is aimed at acne, including acne caused by antibiotic-resistant microbes, to improve its skin penetration and anti-microbial power.
Xoma decided it had to reformulate the drug after a Phase II trial with 253 patients. The drug is made as a gel to be applied to the skin.
Xoma will put the new version of the drug into Phase I trials next year. Its Investigational New Drug application with federal regulators will have to be amended.
